A Community of Legacy & History
Our legacy of service began in June of 1865, at the close of the Civil War. Church women in Philadelphia, who had dedicated themselves to nursing sick and wounded soldiers in battlefield tent hospitals, sought to channel their caregiving energy into a permanent mission. They established a dedicated society to care for older adults who had fallen on hard times.
This mission grew organically with the city of Philadelphia. In 1899 , the community constructed our historic building on Belmont Avenue. Designed in the majestic English Gothic style by the prominent architectural firm Hales & Ballinger, the building was constructed using Port Deposit granite with limestone trim.
Recognized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) as a notable piece of historic architecture, our building has served as a landmark of local care for over a century & a half.
Today, we preserve this incredible heritage. Grand spaces like our terrazzo-floored lobby and our dining room’s leaded glass ceiling provide a dignified, beautiful backdrop where professional care is delivered with warmth and modern safety.
